Truett Stroud
Staff attorney, appeals and federal court
Truett takes appeals after a denial, from reconsideration through federal court.
Truett handles the claims that come back with a no. He reads the denial for what it actually says, finds what the agency didn't have, and chooses the path that fits: a new filing, a review, a hearing or, a few times a year, a case in federal court. He writes the way he talks, which is why his appeal letters are short.

How Truett came to this work
Truett started in a firm that wrote contracts, and he was good at it. Then a neighbor handed him a denial letter on a church parking lot, and he spent that weekend reading everything the neighbor had left out of the file.
He joined the clinic the next year. He says an appeal is the same job as a contract: find what both sides agreed on, and make the other side say it out loud.
